Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation, also known as e-stim, is often used as part of a comprehensive chiropractic plan for treating pain, muscle spasms, and other musculoskeletal conditions.
The name sounds kind of frightening but don’t worry: you won’t feel any pain similar to electric shocks. While the treatment may feel strange, it doesn't cause pain in healthy patients.
What is Electrical Muscle Stimulation?
E-stim is a unique modality used to treat soft tissue conditions. The goal is to stimulate specific muscles, tendons, and ligaments using gentle electrical pulses.
Your doctor may recommend incorporating e-stim into your chiropractic treatment plan for
Improving strength in atrophic or weak muscles
Relaxing tense muscles
Reducing muscle spasms
Tendonitis or strains
What Happens During an E-Stim Session in Leesburg, FL?
E-stim is extremely gentle. In fact, it’s safe enough to purchase your own e-stim machine and conduct the treatments in your home. However, it’s best to stick with visiting our office where Dr. Chapman can provide experienced and knowledgeable treatment.
Dr. Chapman will apply electrodes to specific parts of the body. The electrodes each have a wire that connects to the e-stim machine. It looks very similar to an echocardiogram for running heart tests.
After applying the electrodes, Dr. Chapman will turn on the machine at its lowest setting. You will notice a slight tingling or muscle pulsing but should feel no pain. Dr. Chapman will then increase the settings as needed based on your goals and treatment.
If your goal is to relax muscles, you’ll do nothing during the treatment. If your goal is to strengthen weak or atrophic muscles, Dr. Chapman may ask you to contract or flex specific muscles during the e-stim treatment.
